Phillip Lim’s much-awaited Great Jones Street store — which will join the A.P.C., Billy Reid, and Intermix outposts — will open this August, the designer told the Cut last night. At a celebration for a photo retrospective on model Tao Okamoto, Lim said that the store, his second in New York, will be the flagship and that it will unveil a new concept for the brand. “It’s like some sort of studio luxury,” he said. “Something casual but at the same time highly acute in its details.”

The area’s limited number of storefronts reportedly created a mass bidding war for the space, but being on Great Jones was a priority for him. “I always loved those two streets [Great Jones and Bond] because they’re almost like streets in the middle of nowhere, you know what I mean?” Lim said. “They’re such historical cobblestone streets and there’s only two like that in that area.”

The designer also described his night at the Met Ball, where he accompanied Solange Knowles. “Actually on the way to the Met, she’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to listen to my playlist,’” he said. “Then she put on Mariah Carey and she sang a cappella. I’m like, ‘Wow, this is a personal concert!’” It’s unclear whether there was a little impromptu choreography, too.
