Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian released a video recording that revealed Taylor Swift approved Kanye’s controversial “Famous” lyric. It’s a bad look by any standards, but the whole scenario takes on an even more nightmarish quality when you remember that this is literally Taylor’s worst nightmare come to life.
As BuzzFeed helpfully reminded us, Taylor Swift is a well-known technophobe. The singer has spoken at length about her fears of being bugged or recorded, giving this whole saga the quality of a Greek tragedy in which the heroine’s most primal fear is the very stuff of her undoing.
“I have a lot of issues with buildings like this, ‘cause I always feel like someone has bugged the room, and is either videoing me or recording me,” she told Capital FM back in 2015. “So that’s one of my paranoias.”
And in a Rolling Stone cover story from 2014, Swift went on at length about her fear of wiretaps and hidden cameras and recording devices. “Don’t even get me started on wiretaps,” Swift tells writer Josh Eells. “It’s not a good thing for me to talk about socially. I freak out.”
Who exactly could be bugging her? “The janitor who’s being paid by TMZ,” Swift offered. “This is gonna sound like I’m a crazy person — but we don’t even know. I have to stop myself from thinking about how many aspects of technology I don’t understand.”
How fitting that it was not a janitor who engineered her downfall but, indeed, a mobile mogul. How fitting indeed.
